Matilda

This has not been the best day.  I got up earlier than usual to drive to Cedar Rapids for an important meeting, which is to be held on September 6.  Somehow I had the time exactly right, but as for the day, I was off by 2.

To salvage something out of the trip I stopped at the Hy-Vee Wine and Spirits and picked up a pack of Matilda.  Matilda was one of my favorites at the “Beers to You” that the Gallagher-Bluedorn, put on last February, and I have been anxious to try a whole bottle, rather than a taste.

This has some fantastic flavors -- fruity and yeasty, but the predominating clove spice and funk remind me that Belgian Ale isn’t exactly my favorite style. But overall, I'm glad I got to know Matilda today.

June 4, 2013 follow-up: I had this beer again at Montage, Cedar Falls, Iowa on my birthday.  I paired it with an excellently prepared ahi tuna with hoisin sauce. This experience gave me a new appreciation for the Belgian style. "There is a time for everything."  (Ecclesiastes 3)
