Under the sunflowers on this late summer
day, I toast the waning season with an extraordinary beer. Toasted grains,
sweetness like dark cherries and molasses, warmth of alcohol and the relaxation
of a heavy, satisfied belly are all combined in this bottled German experience.
In previous centuries, clerics would have dopple bocks like this to give sustenance
during periods of fasting. Thanks to the Reformation, I can enjoy a beer from
this tradition with a grin and a happy heart, without worrying about vows of
celibacy, poverty and fasting.
