We, who take pride in our
Bavarian immigrant heritage, have a special place in our heart for Frankenmuth,
Michigan. In the mid 1800s, German Pastor Wilhelm Loehe, sent pious Christians from
Germany to establish a colony in Michigan with the dual purpose: “to give
spiritual comfort to the German pioneers in the Midwest, specifically the
Saginaw Valley, and to show the native Indians in the area "Wie gut und
schön es ist Jesus zu sehen" (how good and wonderful it is to see Jesus)”
(from Frankenmuth.org/aboutus/history).
Tonight I enjoyed another
sample of the Bavarian heritage, kept alive in Frankenmuth. As Sandy set before
the family the comfort foods of pork and potatoes, I paired them with this rich,
malty, refreshing beer.
